Will Vinegrad

An independent artist and founder member of Ground, a community, grassroots art space on Beverley Road, Will and his friends have been organizing events, creating music and making art in & around the city for the past 3 years.

As one of Creative ENRG’s first clients, Will recalled ‘at the beginnings of the Creative ENRG project, they were spending some time going around different organizations in Hull and came to see the space here on Beverley Road. We showed them around the studios, they got a feel for what was going on and invited us to be a part of the Creative ENRG program

Following, Will met regularly with his business advisor to explore aims for him both personally and professionally. Will said ‘I guess as an individual using Creative ENRG, and accessing the support it provided me as an up and coming artist was invaluable. It meant that I had some consistency when it came to meeting with Gill and things to focus on’. These meetings gave Will the impetus to put together a collection of work for showing, and supporting website, and begin to hone in on the organizational aspects of running a business.

As Will’s confidence built, he was offered & accepted the opportunity to exhibit at Queen House Showcase’s opening show. He said, ‘it was kind of empowering for me at that point, you know, being the first in the program to exhibit your work and the excitement of that. Working with Gill to make that happen was really cool and seeing how different people respond to the artworks in situ and having conversations about the work was really empowering at that moment in time,’.

Will has seen the CENRG program grow, from its’ initial push, to where it is today. He talks at length about the focus it has bestowed on him, but he also passionately talks about the community it’s built within the city, and the ripple effect that has caused. He comments, ‘I’ve been able to meet with likeminded people who are also part of the program, who also work in the arts in the city, and it feels as if there’s this pool of creativity in this one space where we can bounce, meet, introduce, just kind of broaden the knowledge and art scene in Hull and, yeah, all combine to do what we love doing.

Reflecting on his time with Creative ENRG Will said ‘Creative ENRG has helped me link with partners across the city, have positive, empowering conversations about artwork and social change, and has helped me to just further expand my confidence as far as my output is concerned. It’s a fantastic resource and it’s not to be taken for granted that something like this exists,’.
